We are taking action to
combat climate change and improve local air quality by delivering low and zero
emission mobility solutions for our customers.
A business imperative
We recognise the complexity and urgency of climate change and consider the
risks and opportunities that it presents to the global economy and the role
transport and our business can play. We stand behind the ambitions of the Paris
Agreement, which are geared towards curbing the global average temperature
increase to substantially below 2°C in relation to the era before
industrialisation, and making endeavours to confine this surge to 1.5°C.
Our ambition
Our ambition is
to be the partner of choice for innovative and sustainable transport,
accelerating the transition to a zero‑carbon
world by eliminating carbon emissions from our operations and supporting a
modal shift to public transport, while building climate resilience across our
business. Public transport networks are the lifeblood of vibrant towns and
cities; essential drivers of local economies and vital to achieving global net
zero carbon ambitions. The vital role we can play as one of the largest UK
transport operators has never been clearer in helping to address the challenges
of climate change. Therefore, we are committed to delivering a more sustainable
future for the communities we serve.

Our aims
Zero-carbon
Eliminating the carbon emissions associated with our operations |
- To be the partner of choice for our customers, passengers and communities for low- and zero-emission mobility solutions
- To continue working with vehicle manufacturers, energy partners, our professional associations and others on the transition to low- and zero-emission mobility solutions
- To enhance our knowledge of the short-, medium- and long-term risks and opportunities for our business in the transition to a low-carbon economy
- To plan our transition in a way that means that we continue to drive growth, be cost efficient, build trust with our stakeholders and future proof our business
- To embed our approach of eliminating carbon and air emissions from our operations into our divisional strategies and business plans
- To address both air quality (e.g. NOx, PMs) and carbon emissions, ensuring we have a holistic and long-term plan
- To model science-based carbon reduction trajectories to 2040 to help inform our transition plans
- To understand the risks from the physical impacts of climate change in line with recognised climate change scenarios*, and build resilience where needed
- To be transparent with our progress and publicly disclose decision-useful climate-related financial information in line with the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

Environmental
policy
Our Group
Environment Policy governs our approach to the environment, including carbon
emissions, and is applicable to all FirstGroup operations. In addition, our
various divisions also have their own environmental policies that are bespoke
to their operations and we have introduced environmental commitments into other
policies such as our Code of Ethics and Supplier Code of Conduct that outline
our expectations for employees and suppliers respectively, with both groups
required to sign annual attestations.
Group Environment Policy
Zero carbon
As a Group we have set ambitious science-based targets, to achieve our net-zero ambitions, along with carbon reduction plans that serve as our comprehensive strategies towards reducing our impact.
We were the
first UK transport operator to pledge our support towards the recommendations
of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures reporting since
2021. We also report to Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) annually.

Climate resilience
Dealing with
climate change presents physical and transition risks, but also significant opportunities that are a key factor in our business
planning and decision making, which can benefit our business, environment
and society.
Air Quality
Air quality profoundly impacts the health and wellbeing of our
communities so we actively support the development of convenient and
cost-effective public transport systems that aim to
minimise harmful air emissions.
Environmental Management
We recognize
the importance of reducing our environmental impact and are actively engaged in
efficient resource utilization, waste reduction, and sustainable operations to
support the well-being of our planet.
