Supporting communities this Christmas: FirstGroup’s charity partnerships
As December unfolds, we’re reminded that the festive season is not only a time for celebration but also an opportunity to reflect on how we can support those in need. At FirstGroup, we’re committed to making a difference in the communities we serve, and our charity partnerships play a central role in achieving this. This Christmas, we’re proud to highlight the incredible work of our three key partners: the Samaritans, Railway Children, and Macmillan Cancer Support.
Samaritans
Mental health challenges can be especially acute during the winter season, with many people feeling the strain of loneliness or personal difficulties. Our long-standing partnership with the Samaritans aims to offer a lifeline to those in crisis.
Through our joint initiatives, we’ve worked to raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention across the rail network. The Small Talk Saves Lives campaign has equipped passengers and staff with the confidence to reach out and potentially save lives. This campaign, launched in 2017, raises awareness within railways stations and public settings about the need for small talk and starting conversations if you think someone might need help. Across our networks staff are trained as mental health first aiders and our teams continue to support Samaritans' vital work, helping ensure no one has to face their struggles alone, through gift in kind awareness campaigns, events and fundraisers.
Railway Children
At FirstGroup, we’re proud to partner with Railway Children, a charity that works tirelessly to protect children at risk of homelessness or exploitation on transport networks.
Our rail colleagues are trained to spot the signs of vulnerability and take appropriate action, offering crucial interventions that can change lives. By supporting Railway Children, we help fund outreach programs and provide a safety net for those who need it most. Every contribution helps bring hope to young people, not just during Christmas but throughout the year.
Macmillan Cancer Support
Cancer is a challenge that affects individuals and families all year round, but the festive season can be particularly difficult for those dealing with the illness. First Bus selected Macmillan as their charity partner and we are proud to stand alongside Macmillan in its mission to provide physical, emotional, and financial support to those affected by cancer.
This partnership is especially important during this time, as we strive to bring comfort and support to those who need it most. From fundraising events to awareness campaigns, our teams are dedicated to making a meaningful contribution to Macmillan’s vital work. As we enter the new year, we will continue to help them raise funds to ensure no one has to face cancer alone.
Driving Change Together
By partnering with Samaritans, Railway Children, and Macmillan Cancer Support, we’re extending our commitment to the wellbeing of our passengers, staff, and the wider community. In 2025 we will continue to support our charity partners with gift-in-kind, payroll giving and matched funding donations, along with taking part in events and other awareness raising activities.
