The European Passenger Transport Operators’ Association (EPTO), is pleased to announce that John Birtwistle, Head of Policy at FirstGroup’s bus division, has been appointed to be its President.  With immediate effect John will lead the body which represents the principal public transport operators in Europe.

Welcoming the appointment, John has restated the intentions of EPTO to remain a strong voice for the private sector:

“We need to maintain strong links between European Union member states irrespective of the future relationship with the UK.  Public transport is a cross boundary operation where market conditions and the operational environment can foster operational excellence and efficiency, and stimulate modal shift away from private cars.  This can help reduce congestion, also improving economic prosperity, air quality and accessibility for all.  We want to work with the decision makers in the EU to share our collective experience and encourage further market opening and opportunities for the private sector.”

EPTO has for over 15 years been engaged at all levels with the key European decision makers and will continue to promote the essential role of the private sector, encouraging further market opening in road and rail passenger transport.  EPTO welcomes like-minded new members and would be delighted to hear from others with shared interests.
