FirstGroup companies carry thousands to Champions League final

09 Jun 2017

The Welsh Government has thanked FirstGroup companies for contributing to the overall success of last week’s UEFA Champions League final.

Held at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff and screen globally to more than 200 million people, the event saw Juventus face cup holders Real Madrid in what is arguably the largest sporting event in the world this year.

In the run up to the match Great Western Railway saw an estimated 30,000 passengers pass through Cardiff Central station while First Travel Solutions provided rail support services between Bristol and Cardiff, Park & Ride services for those working at the match and VIP transport for the main sponsors. Coach transfers were also provided for visiting fans from Bristol, Cardiff and Birmingham airports.

Ken Skates, the Welsh Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure, said: “The UEFA Champions League final in Cardiff this past weekend was an excellent showcase for Wales and is testament to how all partners have worked together to make this high profile global event a success.

“This letter is to convey my personal gratitude and thanks for the contribution that FirstGroup made to ensure our transport and ICT networks performed on the day. This meant we delivered a world class event for football supporters, festival goers, organisers and VIPs.”

Mark Hopwood, Managing Director of Great Western Railway, said: “With thousands of Spanish and Italian fans travelling to Cardiff, our success was due to a successful partnership with other operators, Network Rail, the British Transport Police, UEFA and local stakeholders.

“Considering these two large scale events were outside of our normal planned timetables, for us to help so many people have enjoyable and hassle-free journeys in such an organised manner, is a huge credit to GWR.”

Richard Kirk, Commercial Director for First Travel Solutions, said: “Our remit on this contract was wide and varied and our vast team had been working hard for several months to make sure we were ready to deliver another high profile sporting event.”

“We had crew on the ground for the duration of the event to help fans, staff and visitors safely reach the Principality Stadium and also to assist with their return journey.”
