Youngsters in York aged 18 and under can travel by bus for free with a YOzone card every weekend throughout January and February. All of York’s local bus operators, including First, will be taking part in the free travel offer.
City of York Council’s free travel initiative was given the green light by the Executive Member for Transport and Planning, Cllr Ian Gillies, who approved proposals to allocate £100,000 towards the scheme at a decision session which took place on 9 December. The scheme will see young people aged between 11-18 who have a YOzone card travel for free. People aged under 11 will not need a YOzone card.
Cllr Ian Gillies, Executive Member for Transport and Planning, said:
“Signing up to YOzone could help 11-18 year olds save £2-£3 a day by taking advantage of this offer over the next two months. Therefore I hope it will help to encourage more young people who may not normally use York’s extensive bus service to hop on board and experience how easy it is to use. This will hopefully encourage people to carry on using more sustainable forms of transport for travelling in and around York after the trial period.”
To take advantage of the offer people aged between 11-18 must have a valid YOzone card. Signing up is simple, and can be done online with just a passport and a good quality digital photo.
