Margaret Mayer appointed Head of First Bus Services in Lanarkshire

14 Oct 2014

Scotland’s biggest bus company, First Glasgow, today (Tuesday 14 October) confirmed that it has appointed a new Business Director for its Lanarkshire operations.

Margaret Mayer joins First from Danish technology firm, Steelseries. Reporting to Fiona Kerr, Managing Director of First Glasgow, Margaret heads up the company’s extensive Lanarkshire operations.

Fiona Kerr said: “Margaret joins First with an impressive track record in a range of other industries and brings with her a string of accolades that highlight her passion for customer service.

“This is a key appointment for us, in a position created to ensure that our Lanarkshire business receives the focus and attention it deserves. Margaret’s flair for customer service, her fresh thinking and innovative approach are a perfect fit to lead the business forward, and reflects our commitment to delivering customer focused services for our passengers in Lanarkshire.”

Margaret, who is based at First’s Blantyre depot in Lanarkshire, said: “Opportunities like this don’t come round too often and so I’m delighted to be in post and already relishing the new position.  Despite having just started the role, I can see that across Lanarkshire we have a fantastic team who are absolutely committed to providing first class bus services.

“My overarching aim is to encourage more customers to use our buses.  We want new passengers to try travelling with us and infrequent customers to board our buses more often.  In order to do that we will be working incredibly hard to deliver even better services for our customers.”

Margaret Mayer was born in South Queensferry and began her career working for Scottish Malt Distillers, before spending 25 years working in the Electronics industry.  In 1997 she joined public services provider Amey as Account Director and under her leadership, the team won numerous awards for customer service and innovation.  In 2013 she left Amey to fulfil a lifelong ambition to work abroad and undertook a 12 month contract with Danish company, Steelseries.

First operates around 200 buses across 20 routes in Lanarkshire from two depots at Blantyre and Overtown.  First’s services connect Glasgow City Centre with towns and villages across Lanarkshire including Airdrie, Bellshill, Blantyre, Cambuslang, Coatbridge, Cumbernauld, East Kilbride, Hamilton, Motherwell, Rutherglen and Wishaw.

In the last 12 months First has invested £8.6million in 48 brand new, state of the art buses to help support the launch of the "Lanarkshire Connect" network brand.
