First Scotland East Invests more than £1.5m in New Buses for Borders Services

08 Mar 2013

Travel arrangements for holiday makers and business people in South and West Wales are about to get much easier  as from Monday 11 March Greyhound UK Coaches will be operating direct journeys between Swansea Bus Station and Bristol Airport (and vice versa).

Running via the Bridgend Designer Outlet, Cardiff Bus Station, Newport Railway Station, the University of the West of England’s Frenchay Campus and Bristol Bus Station, journeys between Swansea and Bristol Airport will take just 2 hours and 45 minutes (3 hours during peak periods) and cost from £10 per single journey made.

For travellers wishing to access the airport, or similarly for inbound visitors wishing to get to and from destinations in Wales, the new service will make getting around much easier:   Greyhound Coaches will pick up and drop off right outside Bristol Airport’s main terminal building, taking people direct to their destinations, eliminating the need to drive and book parking at the airport or carry heavy bags between existing rail and bus services.  What’s more by travelling by Greyhound Coach rather than private car, users will not have to pay the Severn Bridge Toll when crossing into Wales.

Tickets covering travel from Swansea to Bristol Airport (and vice versa) on Greyhound start at just £10 each way. Journeys to and from Cardiff and Bristol Airport will be offered from £6 each way.

As one of the transport industry’s most iconic brands, Greyhound coaches are instantly recognisable the world over.  Notably Greyhound UK’s  American counterparts – which are also owned and operated by First – have stared in so many classic film and TV programmes over the years it’s hard to list them all.  Around the world though they are synonymous with long distance travel, and from Monday 11 March people travelling between Bristol and South West Wales will be able to use them too.

Talking about the extension of the route, Marc Reddy, Regional Commercial and Business Growth Director for First in the South West and Wales, says: “This is a fantastic new service.  Greyhound coaches offer 22 inches worth of legroom and free on board WiFi and they are a really comfortable way to travel.  For people in South and West Wales heading to Bristol Airport for a business trip or a holiday there really is no better way to start the journey, and for those arriving at Bristol Airport looking for ways of getting to Wales, this offers the perfect solution.

“Our coaches will pick up and drop off right outside Bristol Airport’s main terminal building, running to and from Swansea via Bristol Bus Station, the University of the West of England (Frenchay Campus), Newport Railway Station, Cardiff Bus Station and the Bridgend Designer Outlet.  Journeys to and from Swansea will take 3 hours during peak periods, while travel to and from Cardiff will take around 1 hour and 45 minutes. The key point though is that once people are on board the Greyhound they won’t need to change services until they reach their destination, instead they can just sit back, relax and let our drivers take the strain.”

Talking about the new service Robert Sinclair, CEO, Bristol Airport, adds: “The new Greyhound UK service gives people in South and West Wales the opportunity to access the extensive range of destinations available from Bristol Airport, including recently announced bmi regional flights to Hamburg and Frankfurt.  The Greyhound service provides a convenient alternative to much longer journeys to Gatwick or Heathrow.  Inbound visitors will also benefit, making it easier to reach venues such as the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and Swansea’s Liberty Stadium for those attending sporting fixtures or concerts.”

The new Swansea – Cardiff - Bristol Airport Greyhound UK service will start on Monday 11 March.  Tickets for the coach, which cost from £10 for those travelling to / from Swansea and Bristol, and £6 for those travelling to / from Cardiff and Bristol, are available to book online via the Greyhound UK website, www.greyhounduk.com, or by calling 0900 096 0000 (calls are charged at 49p per minute from BT landlines at all times. Calls from mobiles will be higher. Lines are open from 9am to 5pm weekdays).
