Tracks to a Greener Future: First Rail’s Journey Beyond Plastics

First Group was proud to celebrate Earth Day on April 22, 2024, a global movement to protect our planet. This annual event, established in 1970 by US Senator Gaylord Nelson and graduate student Denis Hayes from Harvard University, serves as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to safeguard the environment.

Nelson and Hayes were deeply concerned about environmental damage in the United States, particularly a devastating oil spill that occurred in 1969 off the coast of Santa Barbara, California. They recognized the urgent need to engage the public and elevate green issues to the national agenda. Thus, Earth Day was born—a day dedicated to raising awareness, inspiring action, and advocating for a healthier planet.

This year’s Earth Day theme, ‘Planet vs. Plastics,’ underscores the critical importance of addressing plastic pollution. Plastic waste poses significant risks to both human health and the planet. As we witness the harmful effects of plastic on our oceans, wildlife, and ecosystems, it becomes clear that urgent action is necessary.

Lumo, our all-electric train operator connecting London, Newcastle, and Edinburgh, leads the charge in sustainable travel. Lumo’s recent partnership with North East England entrepreneur Callum Mather from Everdurance exemplifies their dedication. By offering cartons of water in 100% recyclable packaging, Lumo eliminates thousands of plastic bottles each week—a pioneering move in the long-distance travel industry. Sustainability is at the heart of Lumo’s ethos, from paper-free practices to a menu that is over 50% plant-based.

But Lumo’s commitment extends beyond water cartons. They’ve collaborated with Flawsome Drinks, a UK brand committed to fair and green practices. Together, they offer apple juice made from ‘wonky’ and surplus apples, packaged in 100% recyclable paper cartons—a refreshing choice for passengers.

Meanwhile, Avanti West Coast tackles food waste head-on. In a groundbreaking move for the UK rail industry, Avanti partnered with DHL Supply Chain to deploy smart temperature monitoring devices across onboard catering operations. These devices track food temperatures, preventing unnecessary waste. Avanti’s commitment aligns with their broader goal of minimizing their environmental footprint.

Beyond Lumo and Avanti West Coast, FirstGroup celebrates sustainability across its franchises. South Western Railway (SWR) leads the way with impressive recycling stats—84% of non-hazardous waste is recycled. SWR’s recent introduction of coffee cup recycling demonstrates their commitment to reducing waste.

And there’s more to come! Hull Trains are exploring sustainable catering options, including a shift toward a plastic-free hot drinks supplier. These collective efforts remind us that small changes can lead to monumental shifts. As the UN works towards a treaty on plastics, let’s heed the words of Yvo de Boer, former UN climate chief: “Events like Earth Day remind us of the long-term cost of shorttermism.” Together with our businesses, FirstGroup is playing its part to support a greener future.
